100.09 Carat Yellow Diamond Expected to Sell For $20 Million

Have you ever seen a yellow diamond?  On May 13, Sotheby’s Geneva will auction the 100.9 ct. Graff Vivid Yellow, considered among the largest fancy vivid yellow diamonds in the world!
The stone, named for famed London diamond collector Laurence Graff, is described by the auction house as “of exceptional beauty and extraordinary fire and brilliance” with a “sensational daffodil yellow” color.  It also carries a $15 million to $20 million estimate!

Originally named the Dream Diamond, the 190 carat rough stone was amazing.  Laurence Graff, who first saw the stone in Kimberley, South Africa, says, “It was an intense golden yellow and one of the rarest yellow diamonds I had ever seen.  I knew the polished stone within would be more than exceptional”.

Over a period of nine months the stone was transformed by Nino Bianco in New York, eventually revealing a cushion cut diamond cut to bring out its brilliance.  The 100.09 carat polished stone, was renamed the Graff Vivid Yellow.

What makes a yellow diamond yellow?  The vast majority of all diamonds contain some nitrogen.  In most yellow diamonds the nitrogen atoms have grouped themselves in very specific ways.  This happens during and right after the diamond is formed.  These nitrogen arrangements absorb light in the blue region of the spectrum producing a yellow color.  Yellow diamonds can contain an orange, green or brown modifying color.
