The Lion King live action remake is set to be released later this month with voices provided by stars including Donald Glover, Beyonce and Seth Rogen.

Disney fans have been left divided after seeing Beyonce voice Nala for the first time in a short clip from the new movie.

It isn't the first time that the singer has appeared in a movie, with one of her first major films roles emerging over 15 years ago.

Here are some of her most famous roles on the big screen, ahead of the release of the Lion King remake.

Acting alongside Mike Myers, she had one of the leading roles in the 2002 movie, playing the 70's FBI agent who travels back to the present day with Austin Powers.

In 2006 she starred as Deena Jones in Dreamgirls, along with Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson.

The romantic drama was also a musical  and it was adapted from a Broadway screenplay of the same name.

Listen was one of the songs that Beyonce can be seen singing in the film, which she later released as a single in 2007, while the Dreamgirls soundtrack album reached number one in the US charts.

Beyonce also played a smaller role as Etta James in the 2008 movie Cadillac Records, which starred Adrien Brody and Jeffrey Wright.

She sang five songs for the film's soundtrack album, including At Last, which she also performed during the inauguration ball of Barack Obama.

The following year she acted opposite Idris Elba in Obsessed, playing his wife Sharon who learns about his colleague Lisa's obsessive behaviour.

In 2013, Beyonce provided the voice of Queen Tara in the animated movie Epic, and she has also voiced Shine in four episodes of the Nick cartoon Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!

Beyonce has made less movie appearances in recent years, making her Lion King role one of her biggest acting parts in over ten years, as she has spent more of her time working on her music.

Earlier this year she released a new album and documentary called Homecoming, which showed behind-the-scenes of her headline performance at Coachella in 2018.

In the fall of 1960, Melvin Van Peebles stood on the Champs-Élysées with wet cheeks and three reels of film under his arm. His life was in shambles. Hours before, the aspiring film director had been lauded during a screening of his films at the famed Cinémathèque in Paris. He was the guest of its founder, legendary cinephile Henri Langlois. After the event, Langlois kissed Van Peebles on both cheeks and drove away. As the afterglow of the applause faded, Van Peebles realized he was alone—stranded in France, with no money and no way home. He spoke no French and had no friends. What was he to do?
