Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 set to cast a record-breaking spell on the box office

Making box office magic: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint at the New York premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Harry Potter and his friends are already making magic at the box office.

According to distributor Warner Bros., Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: part 2 is on its way to breaking box office records over the weekend.

The final big screen instalment of the franchise has already raked in $100 million (£62.2 million) worldwide since its Wednesday opening.

The final showdown: Harry, Hermione and Ron face the great unknown in the franchise's final film

It has already broken records in Australia, Italy and Sweden and France for having the biggest opening day in history.

Harry's last stand has created far more buzz than its predecessor: total revenues were 82 percent higher than they were for Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in November.

Although Part 1 had its biggest opening weekend in the United States with a whopping $125 million (£77.5 million), the last film is still expected to best that number at the box office.

After its midnight opening last night, it's already grossed $43.5 million (£26.97 million), the best showing of all time. This, in part, is because the film was shot in 3-D and and is a more expensive ticket at the theatre.

The 3-D viewings have accounted for 65 percent of total sales so far, which gives the movie an edge over its predecessors.

Although films like Spider-Man 3, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Dark Knight have all earned more than any other Harry Potter debut, the finale is expected to break records because of the 3-D element.
